€1.8 billion of funding available per year until 2021 
​Energy and Climate fund aims to reduce consumption in private and public buildings 

Germany’s Federal KfW Bankengruppe has rolled out several funding programmes to promote the use of energy efficient products in new builds and renovations in the last decade. The success of the programme has been such that funding will now be increased by €300 million annually, taking the total up to €1.8 billion per year until 2021.

KfW bank group has granted loans and subsidies to install energy efficient products in a range of residential and public buildings since 2006. During that period almost 3 million apartments and 1,400 municipal buildings were either renovated of built using the very latest energy efficient technologies. 
Federal Government findings illustrate that heating and cooling systems account for up to 40% of the total energy consumption of houses and public buildings and almost one third of total CO2 emissions. It estimates that a further 80% reduction could be achieved by renovating existing systems using energy-efficient products and modern building technologies.
This clearly represents a massive opportunity for manufacturers of energy-efficient technologies and proof of the potential return on investment that can be achieved. Sin​ce the introduction of the programme an estimated 6 million tons, or the total yearly CO2 emissions of Berlin, has been saved: hard evidence that energy efficient technologies can have a significant effect on reducing the impact of climate change.
