Energy-efficient buildings to play key role in carbon reduction targets
European Commission calls for more competitive and sustainable energy system

The EU’s new framework for climate and energy sets out targets and policy objectives aimed at achieving significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The ultimate goal is to cut Europe’s overall emissions by 80-95% by 2050.
With a growing dependence on foreign fossil fuels and increasing energy prices, improving the energy efficiency of all building types is seen as essential. Ensuring that new builds and renovations of every building type, from single houses through to multi-storey complexes, include energy efficient products capable of minimising consumption will become increasingly important alongside the development of low-carbon technologies and alternative energy sources.
