The challenge
Terminal 5 is the biggest free standing building in the UK and the construction work began in 2002. Energy efficiency was of prime concern for the airport operator, BAA, given the size and high profile nature of the Terminal 5 site. Water is taken from a district cooling scheme, supplied by a central chiller farm, to serve all buildings across the 260ha site at Heathrow. As a result of this set up there was the risk of intermittent pressure throughout the buildings on the site – creating an uncomfortable indoor climate and unnecessary noise.
The solution 
This posed a challenge for the two-port control valves and the balancing of the systems. IMI Hydronic Engineering’ technical expertise quickly found an alternative solution: KTM and DKH combination valves that provide greater flexibility, control and cost savings for any variable flow system. Thanks to IMI Hydronic Engineering’ technical and engineering expertise and ability to provide a robust supply of valves, the system delivers energy efficiency and an optimum indoor climate control at Terminal 5 to time and budget.
