Flower Auction

Pressurisation system in the world’s largest commercial building helps maintain the optimum temperature for flowers.

The challenge

With a floor area of 990,000m2 the Flower Auction is the largest commercial trading space in the world and handles the sale of around 20 million flowers per day. Maintaining a constant and correct temperature over this huge area is vital, as even small changes can damage the flowers and hence, have major commercial consequences.

The owner of the Flower Auction was very satisfied with the Pneumatex pressurization vessels which had been installed 25 years ago. Based on this good experience and a close working relationship with the installers, they turned to IMI Hydronic Engineering when the system required upgrading.

The solution

The building already had a hydronic solution which utilised both TA balancing valves and Pneumatex pressurisation equipment. The team in the Netherlands worked closely with the customer to find the optimum solution to maintain correct system pressure and provided ongoing technical support throughout the design phase, installation and system start-up. During the project, the team from the Flower Auction attended an in-depth training session to learn about principles of pressurisation and their impact on system performance.

Following the success of the project and the close relationship with the customer, IMI Hydronic Engineering have been invited to work on a further expansion of the Flower Auction Building.
