Malmo Ice Hockey Arena

Balancing varying climate needs for the world-class ice hockey arena in Malmö.

The Hydronic Challenge

The new arena in Sweden’s third largest city, Malmö, is a multi-functional facility which, besides being the main ice hockey arena for the Malmö Redhawks is also a venue for major concerts and cultural events. It has a total area of 51,000 square metres and a capacity of 12,500 people for sport events and 15,000 people for concerts.

The various events taking place in the arena have significantly different heating, ventilation and air-conditioning needs. Controlling the climate during an ice hockey game is critical to keeping the ice in good condition.

The Solution

IMI Hydronic Engineering was asked to supply a hydronic solution that would provide the ideal indoor climate with the lowest possible energy usage, whether a concert or an ice hockey game is taking place.

IMI Hydronic Engineering supplied a full range of valves including balancing valves, differential pressure controllers, radiator valves and shunt units. The differential pressure controllers allow the hydronic circuits to operate independently of each other, which means that one circuit can be balanced without influencing the others – a major benefit when commissioning large projects like this.
