Belgrade Airport New Heat Plant - Serbia

The project is building a new heat plant for Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in Serbia. This is the largest airport in the Balkans. Due to the size and demands of the building, the new heat plant needed a power capacity of 43MW. The IMI Hydronic Engineering Team won the project in May 2021 and delivered it in September 2021.

The Hydronic Challenge

This project’s main challenge was the building size the new heat plant had to supply. This large system included 3 new boilers, an intricate and efficient pipe network, a full gas station, and the capacity to distribute energy efficiently to 25 heating substations. The project also had to be delivered before the winter season of 2021/2022.

The Solution

The team’s main objective was to deliver a pressure maintenance system that would optimally manage the needs of such a large heat plant and maintain high water quality. Normally, such a large installation would require an open expansion vessel solution. Still, the IMI Hydronic Engineering team and Serbian designer company BWK Engineers were able to design a heating installation with precise closed pressure maintenance system.

To deliver this solution, the team combined IMI Pneumatex products. To offer optimal pressure management and maintenance, the team opted to use Transfero TI Connect device; however, given the size of the system and the power needed, IMI Hydronic Engineering custom-built two TGI vessels with a water capacity of 20,000 litres each! Using the Transfero TI Connect will ensure precision pressure maintenance with pumps for the heating system. This combined solution ensures that the new heat plant can maintain pressure optimally, reducing energy, increasing user comfort, and providing the highest water quality for all users.
