HyPerformance Upgrade in a Residential Complex, The Netherlands

A housing association in the Netherlands upgraded the heating systems of its 490-apartment residential complex using 2,940 radiator sets by IMI Heimeier to deliver the flexibility needed for various apartment layouts and system setups, while providing precise temperature control and energy savings

The Project

The two residential complexes are made up 490 apartments. The Housing Association of Wageningen, in the Netherlands, that manages them wanted upgrade its heating systems to better align it to the new energy regulations, reduce energy consumption and increase the comfort of the residents.

The Hydronic Challenge

The residential complex houses a variety of apartment layouts a result the owners had a hard time finding a solution that could be installed in a variety of layouts and system setups and ensured all tenants could benefit from a comfortable indoor climate while at the same time, keeping energy costs low.

The Solution

To deliver on the flexibility this project needed IMI Hydronic Engineering advised the client to install IMI Heimeier Eclipse thermostatic valves in combination with Heimeier K-Heads, in all apartments.

The Eclipse thermostatic valve was the perfect solution because, once the flow is set, it cannot be exceeded, and the valve controls the flow rate independently from differential pressure, which can arise due to the system setups. The K-Head also tackled this challenge as its built-in external sensor allows for highly precise temperature control in each room and allows for installation in a variety of surroundings. The features of this solution ensured that the owner would not need to buy different thermostatic heads for each apartment.

In the long term, this combined solution provides energy savings as end-users will not feel the constant need to adjust the temperature creating system inefficiencies and wasting energy.

Selecting the right products is critical for ensuring that HVAC systems meet the needs of tenants in refurbishment projects where much of the equipment remains in place. IMI Hydronic Engineering's experience in the field has enabled us to develop high-quality products and unique technologies that cater to the specific challenges faced by our customers. Flexibility is often a critical requirement for many HVAC systems, and AFC technology expertly address this need.
